Catherine Farish Remininisences: a cartography of intimate spaces
Following her series Dépaysement,Catherine Farish’s recent monotypes are hybrid pictorial organizations anchored in the tradition of engraving and linked to the post-modern concerns of present-day art. Presented on paper, they offer unexpected encounters between process, materials, tools and shapes, uniting the precision of geometry, the discipline of engraving, free use of the plastic arts and the expressive force of lyric abstraction.
In the multi-faceted context of present-day art, all the elements of plastic language can vary. Thus, the different works arising from it are recognizable by their hybridization, by their commonality or their differences, even by their borrowings that confirm their non-adherence to a defined domain. Catherine Farish’s monotypes are highly successful amalgams that draw their constituent parts from engraving, drawing, painting and collage in the wake of minimalism and expressionism. They cannot be exclusively identified with one domain or one movement. Undeniably hybrids, they fully merit their designation as mixed techniques.
